Norval Morrisseau (1932 – 2007) was a self taught Indigenous Canadian Artist also known as Copper Thunderbird.

In his paintings Norval captured legends and images that came to him in visions or dreams. Morrisseau’s early paintings were subjects of myths and traditions of the Anishnaabe people painted on birchbark and moose hide.

Later Morrisseau’s style changed by using more standard material like canvas and brighter colors. The themes of his artwork changed from myths and traditions to his own personal struggles.

The Gallery Upstairs in Milton, Ontario has original art pieces of Norval Morrisseau available.
